This article gives an overview of scientific data, in the simplest layman language, why the Philippines is one of the most active earthquake regions in the world, and why we should be ready anytime. In terms of earthquake readiness, we are far behind Japan. This article aims not to sow panic, but to educate the reader towards understanding the complex situation, and towards preparations and prayers.

9.0 MAGNITUDE TREMOR FOR THE PHILIPPINES

Seismology 101. What is a tectonic plate?
Billions of years ago, Planet Earth was nothing but hot magma. Tectonic plates are solid masses of land or ‘crusts’ floating above the hot magma that have cooled off through millions of years. They have been floating and bumping against each other since the birth of the planet, causing earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions where they meet, finally forming the present seven continents.

“The areas surrounding the Philippine Plate are very active, producing numerous local earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic activity. In the 20th and 21st centuries, earthquakes of (magnitude) 8.0 or greater (have occurred), while 7.0 or less are even more frequent.” (Source – https://tectonicsofasia.weebly.com/philippine-sea-plate.html).

The USGS earthquake map below (USGS Smoczyk, 2013) shows how serious the situation is for the Philippine archipelago, one of the most earthquake-prone regions in the world. The blue circles give a broad view for the period from year 1900 to 2012 – magnitudes 6.5 to 7.0 (small circles), 7.0 to 7.5 (medium circles), 7.5 and greater (big circles). NOTE HOW THE BIG CIRCLES IN THE PHILIPPINE ARCHIPELAGO ARE VERY DENSE.

The smaller Philippine Plate is hemmed in by and has complex collisions with bigger ones, the Eurasian, Sunda, and Pacific Plates, defying scientific predictions. White arrows show the directions of plate collisions. There are 3 types of collisions – 1) vertical, 2) horizontal or diagonal, 3) both. HORIZONTAL OR DIAGONAL COLLISIONS MAY BE MORE DEADLY BECAUSE THE PLATES ‘SCRAPE’ AGAINST EACH OTHER. Vertical collision involves one plate going under another. Complex collisions involve both vertical and horizontal collisions are unpredictable and can be more massive and intense, which is common for the four plates in the USGS map.

Seismologists have detected a ‘rupture’ or tear in the Philippine Plate in its collision with the larger Eurasian Plate, which may ultimately cause future MORE DEVASTATING ABOVE-8-MAGNITUDE TREMORS IN THE PHILIPPINE ARCHIPELAGO.

In truth, no one knows when, where, and how intense the next major earthquake will be. It is like a rubber band snapping, which happens with little or no warning. With the recent increasing frequency of earthquakes across the entire Pacific Rim of Fire, we should prepare physically, psychologically, and spiritually for ‘the big one’.

The Cumulative Factor. If there have been no major earthquakes for a long time, say 400 years, tectonic forces may be building up towards a possible ‘8.0 to 9.0 magnitude’ tremor. The major earthquakes in Samar of 7.6 magnitude in August 2012, and in Cebu-Bohol of 7.2 magnitude in October 2013 were actually ‘blessings in disguise’ in that they relieve the pressure building up. It is better to have five ‘small’ earthquakes than a large deadly one. The Bohol-Cebu earthquake completely destroyed ten ancient churches in Bohol alone, a first in Church history.

The Biblical Factor.
Warnings from the Lord. “And they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away”, Matthew 24:39. “Amen I say to you. Beware and be cautious, for you know not the day nor the hour”, Matthew 25:12-13. Lord, save us from your wrath, as we ask forgiveness for our sins.

7.2 MAGNITUDE TREMOR FOR METRO-MANILA
The West Valley ‘Prophecy’

The two graphs below explain clearly the situation in the West Valley fault-line cutting across Metro-Manila. After all these detailed research, NO ONE KNOWS WHEN, which means we need to not to be caught by surprise.
