THE GLOBAL FINANCIAL VORTEX

 

we are all inter-connected

in an ever shrinking planet

when one economy moves, big or small

all others move without exception

 

if a big economy moves

the waves are bigger

if a small economy moves

even the big ones feel it

 

there is no escaping

from this financial gravitational pull

we are all trapped within our financial planet

we are one cosmic cell, all of us

 

rich poor generous greedy

wise unwise good evil

this vortex leads only to one destination

one human fate forever cyclic

 

The global financial vortex is like a large swimming pool where balls of all sizes float – big economies are big balls, small economies small balls. Every ball makes waves. Both growth and decline are extremely contagious. Balls grow or shrink. In a time of extreme decline, when the largest balls shrink and make big waves, all others are affected. At a certain point, there will be wars and anarchy in the name of individual survival. We are headed for that point, if we fail to contain the looming avalanche.

 

Because there are so many variables, a single-approach solution is elusive and almost impossible. Since the entire financial soup is so complex, multiple solutions, or approaches to solutions are needed all at once. And there has to be leadership. As of now, we do not have a conductor. Intervenors are ineffective and few, fence sitters are too many. Everyone is mostly out for himself. Until we achieve concerted effort, we are all doomed together. Until the greedy repent to nurture the needy, we are doomed. Until we learn to share in an era of want, we induce wars in the name of survival. The little unity in certain regions, like the EU, is so easily being undermined by the dilemma of rescue versus non-rescue.

 

The global financial vortex flowchart shown below reflects the growing momentum towards a global crisis, and the dilemma of new solutions creating new bigger problems. We need a lot of soul-searching, radical structural changes, and a return to basics. Most of all, we have to stop fighting. Harmony is the key. We need to work together to contain the financial hurricane brewing, a unified action to make radical incisions to contain the growing cancer. We need also to pray for peace and recovery.

Here is a short litany of variables, a partial list, in the financial soup, some of which overlap. They show the complexity and immensity of the task at hand –

 

runaway spending

runaway lending

speculation and greed, especially hedge funds

inadequate rescue funds, too late too little

flawed rescue and intervention plans

confidence crisis, the panic syndrome

fear of investing and lending, the withdrawal syndrome

leadership crisis, no orchestrated solution

deterioration of unified action

overtaken by social unrest and anarchy

overstretched and over-printing of currencies

new solutions trigger new problems

 

by grabbing you destroy yourself

by sharing you build yourself

through unilateral action

you trigger wars

through concerted action

you induce peace

 

peace and cooperation

is the key to growth

rivalry and competition

is the key to decline

competition is for games

cooperation is for crisis
