THE GRANDMASTER AND THE CONVICT A True Story
I read this story in a magazine a decade or so ago. I can’t remember my source, but this is a true story. A convict at Alcatraz had to find a way of not getting crazy from sheer boredom. So he started to read all the chess books in the world he could get his hands on. Having a photographic memory, he memorized all the moves in the best grandmaster games. Before that, he never played a game of chess.
A grandmaster, hearing about him in a magazine article, was so intrigued that he visited him at Alcatraz, equipped with a chess board. He challenged the convict to a game of chess. The convict refused as it would be the first ever chess game he would play in his life, and with a grandmaster at that. After much prodding, he reluctantly conceded. He recalled that in his game with the grandmaster, all the moves came from a grandmaster game he knew among the hundreds he had memorized. He beat the grandmaster. Very rarely, theoretical wisdom can beat experiential wisdom; a green horn can beat a seasoned warrior.
