Marian Messages to Ukraine

Let us for now forget the big-time – the geopolitics of the war in Ukraine – the proxies US-NATO-Russia, the attack drones and hypersonic missiles, the stealth bombers and nuclear submarines and carriers, the media wars, the energy wars, etc.

Let us step back and for now focus on the small-time – the ordinary Ukrainian people suffering in fear and silence, voiceless and helpless, dying from hunger if not from bombs. Majority of the population are Orthodox Christians, who are very close to the heart of Our Lady of Kyiv.

The intimacy of the Blessed Virgin with the Ukrainian people dates back to the 19th century. The Virgin, throughout the centuries, has appeared to the Ukrainian people time and again. The Virgin loves the Ukrainian people in their moment of crisis.

On January 22, 2022, an awesome event was caught on camera. During the Ukrainian Orthodox Celebration in an unspecified town, a white Dove alighted on top of the altar painting of the Baptism of Jesus. It was the Holy Spirit visiting Ukraine days before the Russian invasion.

There was a second miracle – the cross appeared over St. Michael’s Cathedral in Kiev.

This was a sign of God’s assurance to the Ukrainian people that He is with them in their moment of crisis. It was an omen of hope to strengthen the hearts of the Ukrainian Christians, 70% of whom are Orthodox.

On May 12, 1914, two weeks before World War I, 22 people working in the fields near the Church of the Holy Trinity in the village of Hrushiv in Ukraine, witnessed an apparition of the Blessed Virgin.

The Virgin said, “There will be a war.  Russia will become a godless country.  The Ukraine, as a nation, will suffer terribly for eighty years – and will have to live through the world wars, but it will be free afterwards.” The prophecy was fulfilled – 1) World War I broke out two weeks after the apparition, 2) Eventually, Ukraine gained its independence, and 3) the Iron Curtain was born, the ‘godless government’ suppressing Christianity.

In 1987, the Blessed Virgin appeared to Marina Kizyn, aged 12 near the same church of Hrushiv. The apparitions continued daily until August 15, feast of the Assumption of Our Lady, which attracted an estimated 45,000 to 70,000 people daily. About to 500,000 witnessed the apparitions. Hrushiv became a instant Marian pilgrim center. The Virgin in Hrushiv became Our Lady of Ukraine.

Our Lady even appeared to the KGB agents and Soviet militia trying to manage the huge crowds. At that time, churches were closed and Christianity was banned. Priests from the ‘underground Church’ emerged from hiding and defied the KGB, saying ten Holy Masses daily in front of the Holy Trinity Church. The KGB did not touch them.

Hrushiv was saved from a deadly cholera epidemic in 1855, with not a single death in the village, after the people offered Mass at a spring that suddenly came out of the ground near a willow tree. On April 26, 1987, one year after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, a bright light filled the Holy Trinity Church where the Virgin again appeared, floating above the dome of the church.

The Virgin’s love for the Ukrainian people is demonstrated when she said, “I have come on purpose to thank the Ukrainian people because you have suffered most for the church of Christ in the last 70 years.  I have come to comfort you and to tell you that your suffering will soon come to an end.  Ukraine will become an independent state.” (Source –, July 6, 2018.)

It is this Marian spirit imbedded in the Ukrainian people that keeps them strong and hopeful against all odds, resigned to the ‘suffering’ prophesied by the Virgin. The photo of a Ukrainian soldier with a rosary as his armor (below) went viral in the Internet. So did a Ukrainian soldier saying goodbye and hugging his weeping daughter and wife.

In the same year as the Virgin’s apparition in Hrushiv in 1987, Gorbachev visited Pope John Paul II. Pope John Paul II consecrated Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The Cold War ended, the underground Ukrainian Church rose from hiding, and the Berlin Wall crumbled. Pope John Paul II was presented with a painting of Our Lady of Ukraine.
