The US-wide abortion civil war has now escalated into several tiers – 1) Republican vs. Democrats, 2) Biden and the Federal Government vs. the Supreme Court and the State Governments, 3) anti-abortion Bishops vs. pro-abortion legislators, 4) the Vatican vs Local Dioceses, and 5) the majority pro-abortion vs. minority anti-abortion public.
America is waking up from its pro-abortion past, challenged by a growing anti-abortion movement.

In 1973, there was a controversial decision by the US Supreme Court (Roe vs Wade), that set a precedent to legalize abortion across the entire US. Recently, the Supreme Court reversed this Federal precedent, leaving the question of abortion up to State Laws. This threw the entire US into a turmoil, with opposing street, legislative and media protests. The civil war has escalated.
The reversal enraged Biden and the entire nationwide majority pro-abortion movement. In the last few months, the US anti-abortion movement has been gathering momentum with nearly a dozen Republican-led States promulgating anti-abortion laws. As of this writing, there are 13 States with anti-abortion laws, 15 likely to have anti-abortion laws, and 18 with legalized abortion laws. So, clearly the minority is shifting into majority. (See map below).
ABORTION MAP U.S.A. as of June 16, 2022

During the 59 years the Roe vs. Wade precedent legalized abortion in the entire US, in 1973, , about 60 million unborn babies were killed, tantamount to genocide, according to anti-abortionists. The US has the greatest number of abortions worldwide.
In retaliation, on July 8, Biden issued an Executive Order to try to protect women’s rights to abortion, whose impact is questionable, since States have the right to promulgate laws restricting abortion against Federal pressures. Baltimore Archbishop William Lori said Biden denying unborn babies the right to life as ‘deeply disturbing’ (Vatican news, July 10).
Texas instantly sued the Biden Administration, charging that it illegally was preempting State abortion laws.
Biden fears that, with the reversal of the Roe vs. Wade precedent, an avalanche of other anti-abortion measures would follow next. He said, “The Supreme Court would then outlaw the use of contraception …. it’s going to cause a mini-revolution and they’re going to vote a lot of these folks out of office.”
BISHOPS BAN HOLY COMMUNION FOR PELOSI AND ANTI-ABORTIONISTS
San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone, supported by 13 US Bishops, has barred House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., from receiving Holy Communion “due to her aggressive and public support of abortion rights” (Newsmax, June 7, 2022, quoting National Public Radio).
Archbishop Cordileone wrote, ”After numerous attempts to speak with her to help her understand the grave evil she is perpetrating, the scandal she is causing, and the danger to her own soul she is risking, I have determined that the point has come in which I must make a public declaration that she is not to be admitted to Holy Communion”.
The move is causing a stir across the entire U.S., promising a Federal vs. State legislative conflict. The question lies – will the ban-communion-for-abortionists movement spread to include all abortion supporters among the many states which now have anti-abortion laws, a major dilemma.
Back in June 2021, Catholic bishops drafted a guideline on denying Holy Communion for Biden and pro-abortionists, in defiance of Vatican warnings (New York Times June 18). Fr. James J. Martin, S.J., in protest over the growing ban-holy-communion-for-abortionists movement, argued on Twitter that “denying Communion to politicians is the wrong way to address this pastorally.” He added that Pope Francis has never denied Communion to anyone, quoting him as saying “What must a pastor do? Be a pastor. Don’t go condemning. Be a pastor because he is a pastor also for the excommunicated”. President Joseph Biden, who is also a victim of the no-communion-for-abortionists, said Pope Francis told him he could continue to present himself for communion.
Earlier this year, a group of Colorado bishops suggested to some Catholic lawmakers in the state Legislature to ”voluntarily refrain from Holy Communion” after approving a law supporting abortion rights (Source – Religious News Service). The archbishop of Denver and the bishop of Colorado Springs wrote in an April 4 letter that support of the Reproductive Health Equity Act (RHEA) “was participating in a gravely sinful action because it facilitates the killing of innocent unborn babies.”
RHEA is Colorado’s House Bill 22-1279 supporting fundamental rights to make reproductive health-care decisions free from government interference, triggered by Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito.
”We pray that this letter and our request to refrain from receiving Jesus in the Eucharist spurs sincere reflection and conversion in the hearts of those who have participated in allowing this grave act of injustice to become law,” it added.
