The energy, density and gravity within this ‘ball’ was so massive, it defies imagination, perhaps a number containing 100 or more zeroes. Billions of years ago, this molecular ball exploded within eight nano-seconds (billionth of a second), ushering in the ‘birth’ of the Universe as we know it today. That explosion is still in motion today, trillions of stars and galaxies scattering and expanding away from ground zero. At least, that is the theory of some expert astronomers.

Theories about the Universe by noted astronomers keep evolving through the decades since the time of Galileo, because they are precisely theories. They may remain theories through time because Man is not able to physically witness the Universe, for example, a nova exploding. They can be recorded by sophisticated space instruments, but they are still a ‘theories’ in the absence of thorough scientific data. The event or phenomenon is clear but the nature, the causes and effects, are still not known.
Through the decades, previous theories become inputs to new ones, so Man’s perspective of the Universe evolves and improves through time. Astronomers dispute and contradict each other, which is healthy for an evolving refined perspective of the Universe.
The ‘Big Bang’ is a relatively new theory, but acclaimed by many astronomers. Some astronomers have disputed it and offered other theories, which are fraught with even deeper mysteries. Indeed, a perspective of the Universe is elusive. Disputes have become even more intense because it has transcended into the philosophy of the existence of God.
But, before we are thrown off and become more confused rather than enlightened, let us focus on the ‘Big Bang’ as a good starting point in the discussion of the genesis or birth of the Universe, if there really is a ‘birth’.

In theory, the Universe is made up 85%, more or less, of ‘voids’ or dark areas with dark galaxies and invisible dark matter or energy, a topic for a separate article. Astronomers say that these cosmic voids are responsible for the slowing down of the Big Bang. Some voids are as large as a million galaxies. Yet, these dark matter or energy is relatively still a mystery to Man.
They say that, theoretically, this slowing down will eventually cause the Big Bang explosion to reach zero momentum and implode back to its original ground zero, just like a ball thrown up in the air, returning to Earth. Then we may have Big Bang No. 2. This cycle of explosions–implosions may repeat itself, unless there is an intervening ‘cosmic event’ larger than the Big Bang. These are mere theories subject to research and debates among astronomers. It is possible we cannot have an answer because the life span of Man may be just a few ‘seconds’ compared to the life span of the Universe of a ‘semi-eternity’, whatever that may mean.
The ‘War’ Between Scientists and Theologians
What happened before the Big Bang is even a greater mystery. Stephen Hawking, a celebrated atheist-cosmologist, started to veer from science into theology. Hawking said that, prior to the Big Bang, there was NOTHING. He concluded everything came from nothing, and there is no God as Creator. This ridiculous religious statement from a celebrated atheist scientist failed to see that ‘nothing’ is a mere concept of our minds, not in reality. We may see voids and dark galaxies as ‘nothing’, but they are really ‘something’.
Hawking says “philosophy is dead”, then started philosophizing. Atheists-scientists arrogantly say science will eventually have all the answers, and the Bible is a myth perpetrated by theologians-philosophers. But the theologians, in all humility, say God created all this cosmic grandeur which is simply beyond our comprehension. Man, in all his arrogance and humility, is far from understanding the Universe, and even perhaps farther from understanding himself.
Theologians made the same error, veering into the realm of science by stating that Darwin’s theory of evolution implied God did not create Man, a pure ‘natural event’. After treating Darwin and Galileo as ‘heretics, the Church later reversed their judgement from condemnation to admiration. They realized that theologians cannot be an authority in science. Indeed, ironically, Darwin proved God as Creator of the Universe.
The evolving concept of the Universe will forever remain a mystery to Man. As we make new astounding discoveries, the mystery deepens.
