This inspiring story happened deep in the remote impoverished rural areas of Mindanao in the Philippines about 20 years ago. Women somehow discovered their power, given the opportunity and circumstance. They simply emerged from nowhere like the sun after a heavy downpour, half spontaneously half painstakingly, half inspiration half perspiration. A complex set of local and international Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) were behind the curtain to draw the magic out of these women.

It would be nice to make a part 2 documentary now, after 20-odd years, to see if the whole thing has indeed become sustainable, if the practice still thrives in these areas today, if women entrepreneurship has indeed been ingrained into the culture and fabric of the marginals and if it is somehow spreading. And if it has not become sustainable, we must find out why and try again to reconstruct and refined a once-successful system. We must never give up until we succeed in coming up with a working model in uplifting marginals.
